Breakthrough Medical Packaging Solution Debuts using Verde® Bioresin’s PolyEarthylene®
Brocal is proving that biodegradable packaging is not only possible, but practical for the medical industry. In collaboration with Verde® Bioresins, Brocal has introduced the first biodegradable sharp container designed specifically for healthcare waste. Made with PolyEarthylene® PEL IP 269, a proprietary biobased and biodegradable resin, this innovation marks a major step forward in reducing the environmental impact of regulated medical waste.
This innovation was driven by Brocal’s commitment to providing environmentally responsible solutions to the healthcare industry, especially in the management of regulated medical waste. The new sharp container maintains all the performance and durability of traditional plastic containers during its useful life but offers a vastly improved environmental profile at end of life.
The resin, PolyEarthylene®, is engineered to biodegrade in typical landfill conditions. After disposal, naturally-occurring microbes attach to the material’s surface and initiate a breakdown process that transforms the plastic into carbon dioxide (CO₂), methane (CH₄), water, and biomass, minimizing concerns of microplastic residues being left behind in the environment.
Key Benefits:
· No microplastics – complete breakdown within landfill environments.
· Shelf-stable and safe – performs like traditional plastic in use.
· Biodegrades in less than three years per ASTM D5511 testing standards.
· Minimum 25% biobased content per ASTM D6866 testing standards.
· Up to 30% more cost-effective than other biobased alternatives.
· Non-Toxic Composition: California Prop 65 compliant (PFAS, BPA, Heavy Metals and Phthalate Free).
· FDA Compliance: Meets food safety and regulatory standards according FDA Title 21.
This project highlights Brocal’s proactive approach to sustainability, seeking out innovative partners like Verde® Bioresins to help meet the growing demand for environmentally conscious alternatives in healthcare.
